I got the scissors out and cut into my doily.... as you can see, cutting through the rounds to release the tension so it would lay flat clearly shows the gap left by doing the tight tiny picot joins rather than the longer picot joins that allow give and stretch.... I really need to compensate for this by adjusting the stitch counts. I completely forgot about that! Duh! What was I (or not) thinking.... No wonder it was all puckered!
I kept the first round and have just finished my new modified round 5 and things are looking much much better!

Cringing to see so much work cut up like that. You're a brave tatter @IdahoCanuck! Glad it's working out for you. I didn't have enough cupping issues to justify cutting up the whole doily, but I did cut off my 2/3rds done round 5 to replace it with something with a little more give. After that luckily no more issues...

I agree with Kersti. Cupping tends to show up after the second or third rounds, where not even blocking the article will help. It's best to stop the pattern there and, dare I say it, start again with adjustments. You'll feel much better for the early sacrifice of shorter rounds.

Not so Patty! It's a learning journey... I wasn't at all happy with how it was working out...... and it would have ended in the trash anyway..... after all it's just a bit of string. So, cut it up, study the problem, and fix it. I just finished round 6 and it is all lying perfectly flat..... Well worth the bit of extra effort! :)

Argh. I seem to have come out one ring short somehow. It's completely illogical. Either I should have an obvious skip in a previous round or an entire repeat should be missing (if I had skipped a ring in the center round).

Suggestions? Anyone? Please? lol

Oh dear ! Wouldn't it have made a lovely Bowl, if stiffened & shaped properly ?!

Oh double dear !
1. My own feeling is that there may be a mistake while joining this scalloped round & would be well worth checking again. I say this only because I had to be extra vigilant while doing this round, so as not to join erroneously.
Also, you would've probably faced some problem in the round Subsequent to the mistake. Ergo ....

  1. If the missing ring/element does in fact lie in some earlier round, and Before you start snipping away, make the last scallop as per pattern. The only difference would be that the last chain would be missing. As long as the scalloped edge seems regular, the last chain may not be very discernible. In any case, if it does not work , you will only have wasted a bit more thread & time.

That's all I've got. Hope you work it out . It can get so frustrating !

Do you have a picture of the full thing? That will help us to have a look and see what went wrong and where and suggest as pain free as possible ways to fix it.

It's not blocked and there are a bunch of loose ends. Sorry. It must be in one of the middle rounds, I think it's not in round 9 anyway...

To me it seems the issue (or at least A issue), is in round 8. You missed one attachment point there for your rings and made only 39 instead of 40. In your picture it is at about 7 (on an analog clock face).

I think it's in round 8, down the bottom in the photo slightly to the left, looks like you missed a ring between the two rings of the previous round. Hope you can put it right.

Agreed, around 7o'clock position (bottom towards left), there is a ring missing. How to fix it is up to you, but here are some options.

  1. Cut off round 9, cut into round 8 where the mistake is and add the extra ring & chain then redo round 9.

  2. Don't cut off round 9. Finish the scallop you're on, join it where you would, ignore the last chain and call it a design feature! A fresh original design by you!

You're right. Thank you. Now let's see how much string I have left...

  1. Cut off round 9 until just after the mistake. Cut into round 8 and repair as per KT's suggestion then continue round 9

I'm only up to round 6, it's taking shape and looking better the more I complete. :) Here is a picture of me tatting round 3 or 4 on the plane!

AAARRGGHH! started round 6 today and noticed a mistake (where the shuttle is pointing) where I didn't attach the chain to the base of the ring. Please tell me that this will be ok and I don't have to undo what I've done since...

That sucks Heledd! But hang in there! If I were you I'd not bother undoing all that. I'd either start the round over. Alternatively you could cut shortly after the mistake and unravel the last bit, attach new threads and go from there. That'll save you a lot of time but cost you some thread and 2 extra ends to deal with.
On the other hand, if you have the patience and the thread can handle it... there's only 3 rings to undo...
Good luck!

Hi :-)

I can't quite make out whether the chain is of the correct length or not. So, here are 2 quick fix solutions in both scenarios ....

  1. If chain is of correct length and only needs to be attached : Thread a needle with some thread (same tatting thread, or a similar colour in sewing thread). Sew the chain at the correct spot, making a small knot if required. Hide the ends of this sewing thread. Voilà ! Your chain is as it should be :-)

  2. In case chain is shorter :
Again, insert an auxiliary thread & complete the required ds, joining as required.
    OR
Carefully cut the naughty chain right in the center. Slowly pull off the stitches on either end, so that you have 4 loose thread ends/tails. Join auxiliary thread to the ends that come earlier (shuttle thread to shuttle thread & ball thread to ball thread. Tat the chain correctly, joining below, ... Then, when you reach the other end, tie to the snipped ends that are remaining. Hide all ends.
Use Weaver's Knot to join the auxiliary thread in the beginning . It is very secure.

Hope this helps. It may spark off some more ideas :-)
Happy tatting
