Probably the only time in my tatting career when a lighter is a necessary tool. The doily center is an old cd, which I melted holes into with a large needle. For anyone wishing to try this, make sure your needle is very hot, so it doesn't get stuck in the plastic. Also, let the cd cool between needle punches to avoid making cracks.
The center is made with row 1 on the bottom of the cd, and row 2 on top being connected through the holes. This makes the center tatting pop up.
After row 2 the tatting started to cup badly, and the scallops in the final row are very frilly. It could be made to lay down if I were stricter about blocking. Personally, I like the look of overflowing lace when it's sitting on a cake stand.
Now to make the cake!
