What is cluny tatting?

My interest in tallies is mainly their potential & beauty in freeform & 3D tatting . So while I still haven't been able to make/repeat a classic tally shape, I enjoy the shapes they take - it's like a new discovery every time .

Wow, Muskaan, that's awesome. I love the double tally with bead, too!

There is a beautiful white Cluny scalloped motif on Pinterest. Just stunning.

Have been terribly busy, but here's some 'progress' in my trials :

1. I made the 4-warp tally on a loom. However, the threads came out at opposite ends ! Before I could follow through, I went into a long tatting hiatus & forgot how I'd wrapped the loom :-(
   

2. Did successfully make the 5-warp tallies ! Need to pack down the weaves, but I have the loom notations jotted down this time - can't rely on my wonderful memory !
   

3. Have completed 3D studs/earrings, with beads & will soon share pattern

From what I have seen of Cluny tatting projects, Elise du Sud's work is great ! There is, however, a Russian site where there is a display/gallery of some awesome Cluny tatting projects. Will share when I can locate the link.

Yay! I worked out the 4 warp loom tally ! I reversed the logic I had used to make the 5 warp tally, & it worked . Loads of practice required for consistency, but feeling happy to have figured it out. And I have the notations this time :-)

Here are my 4-thread practice cluny leaves. I used needle tatting.
In reality there are 5 threads but two of the threads run parallel and they are treated as one when I weave under/over with the needle.

Here is the mini 4-thread loom I made by watching loom weavers. I couldn't find information online a while back, so I started experimenting with this.
here is how I wrapped the threads:
Step1: begin at the base, needle thread should stay untwisted to your right.
step2: With ball thread go to number 1, wrap in the back to 4 then down to base. (Here, from 1 to 4 you're creating a long loop in the back of the loom and this will be the first loop you'll want to be closing at the end.) At base, leave a loop hanging down (as seen with shuttle instructions) and hold.
Step3: go to number 2 to 3 then down to the base again. (Here, in the back of 2 and 3 you create a smaller loop. You'll closed this smaller loop after closing the large loop mentioned in step 2). At the base leave a second loop hanging down and hold.
Step 4: bring ball thread back to number 2 and secure with cloth pin or some weight. Here, from the base to number 2 you see two threads running parallel, but that is ok because you will weave under or over both threads.

Continuing with my loom, making sure that none of the hanging loops you are hare holding at the base are twisted, begin weaving with needle:
step1: over 4, under 3, over 2threads of 2, under 1, then
step 2: over1, under 2threads of 2, over 3, under 4.
Continue for a long as you want them to be.
step 3: gently begin pulling from one of the bottom loops until you identify which one closes the long loop you made in the back of 1 to 4 ( do not pulled this too tight) Now you have at base a very long loop to close next.
Step4: pulled thread from 2to3 to close the long loop hanging at the base. Now you have a long loop at the top to be closed next.
Step5: Pull bottom loop until you close the long loop you created on step4
Step6: pull ball thread to complete closing all loops. You should now have both threads, ball and needle, at the top of your tally to continue working on your project.
This is the way I figured out how to work the 4-thread tallies. I noticed recently Judy Connors posted a tutorial on how to work with a loom, but I did not get a chance to printed and practice with it yet.
I hope my directions help. Let me know if you think something doesn't make sense and I will make corrections. I would love to make a video and share it in the future. Happy tatting.

It is so interesting, though, that I got the same result by following a slightly different looping sequence ! I will diagram it & share ASAP. Of course, the basic logic & rationale remains the same, only the sequence is altered & I think that eases the identification of which thread to pull while closing.

Am enjoying your experimentation too :-) It is kind of addicting, no ?!

But seriously, the time it took me to write that up, organize, the umpteen drafts & redrafts, .... phew, I could've written a thesis with all that effort & time & thought . In fact, I've stopped any serious or experimental tatting so that I can stayed focused on these posts - it is so easy to get distracted & lose one's grip ...

I have used @JudithConnors card loom to weave different kinds of tallies :
Hanging Cluny Leaf , Split Cluny (didn't even know this 'existed' till I was confirming some links for the blog post!) , making a picot at the tip of a tally , using the split cluny to 'fix a mistake' in order to bring both threads to the same end, ...
And due to my DH, a new idea for a Cluny tatting loom - A Lego Loom & how to make the Warps on it ...

My last post on this subject, for now (due to other commitments), will be on how to make the loom Warps for 3 & 4 veined leaves/petals/tallies. And all this on the Same card loom (with a few extra slits).

Wow, Muskaan, you really are very creative with clunies! The idea of using Lego or something similar to raise the warp threads - that's great!
